Folks offer different opinions about
what constitutes the “south coast”. Some
have it located in Massachusetts and
Rhode Island (all the way to Newport!)
but most think of it as the section of Massachusetts that is south of the
“South Shore” but not including Cape Cod
and the Islands. Here at Buzzards Bay
Brewing, we think of it as all the towns
and islands that touch Buzzards Bay as
well as the towns just inland from
these. Thus the South Coast stretches
from Fall River, through New Bedford and
Wareham, out and around to Falmouth and
Woods Hole and over to Cuttyhunk.
Argument for Plymouth’s inclusion are to
be had and we tend to agree because each
town and village (including Westport,
our home) was settled by those who came
directly from Plymouth.
No matter how you slice it up, Buzzards
Bay is the crowning jewel of South Coast
life.
Buzzards Bay was Euro-discovered (as
opposed to “people discovered”, people
have been living here for millennia) in
1602 by Bartholomew Gosnold. When he and
his crew arrived at Buzzards Bay from
England, they settled for several weeks
at Cuttyhunk in hopes of setting up a
permanent settlement. They journeyed
about the region from there and, rather
than settle in, decided to return home
to England. What they reported finding
was a pristine and beautiful land such
as non of them had seen before. One
sailor remarked in his journal that
Buzzards Bay was, “the stateliest sound
that ever I was in.” Indeed, anyone that
has ever set out on Buzzards Bay cannot
do so without remarking on it’s
unspoiled beauty. Thanks to many,
Buzzards Bay has remained clean and in
1985 was designated by the US Government
an “Estuary of National Significance.”
Buzzards Bay was named after the large
amount of “buzzards” that were seen
here. In 1600’s English, “buzzard”
translated into any member of the hawk
family. In our case, that member is the
Osprey. Yes, we know, our Buzzard on our
Buzzards Bay Brewing label is not an
Osprey. We take this moment to
apologize. Sorry.
Today Buzzards Bay is home to our
nations largest fishing fleet (New
Bedford), some of Massachusetts
oldest family farms (dating back to the
1600’s), the Bay State's world class wines and the US center for cranberry growing. We also have several state
forests and a National Park, the New
Bedford Whaling National Park. We invite
you to explore the South Coast through
our links page and make a visit to this
amazing place. Oh, and we’ll keep a cold
beer ready for yah.
